Bei dem Namen Hawaii handelt es sich um eine englische Adaptierung des einheimischen Wortes für "Heimat" (hawaiki or owhyhee). Hawaii wurde zuerst von polynesischen Seefahrern zwischen 300 und 600 nach Christus besiedelt, die von anderen pazifischen Inseln kamen. Im Jahr 1778 besuchte der britische Kapitän James Cook die Inseln, die er Sandwich Islands nannte. Der Annexion 1898 folgte 1900 die Ernennung zum U.S. Territorium. Hawaii ist der 50ste und jüngste Bundesstaat der Vereinigten Staaten; er trat der Union 1959 kurz nach Alaska bei. Hawaii ist weltberühmt für sein angenehmes Klima und seine atemberaubende Schönheit. Man findet tiefblaues Meer, Blumen in schillernden Farben, bezaubernde Palmen, spektakuläre Wasserfälle und beeindruckende Vulkane. Hawaii besteht aus einer Kette von 132 Inseln; die acht Hauptinseln bilden das südöstliche Ende der Kette. Hawaii, der „Aloha State", hat viele Bräuche, die ihren Ursprung in der polynesischen Urbevölkerung haben.
